U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps' recent slip-up should serve a warning to other athletes... NHL in Europe... and Vanek's trick.

At the beginning of the season few, if any, thought Jeff Carter would challenge for the Rocket Richard Trophy, but here he is.
One doesn’t have to look far down the NHL’s goal-scoring list to find an unfamiliar name. Try two spots. A load of players you may not recognize are making waves this season, so we'll take some time to introduce them to you.
Perhaps it’s memory loss due to accumulated sleep deprivation from watching west coast games, but it sure seems like there’s more than the usual sum of out-of-the-blue productive NHLers this season; players you wouldn’t recognize at a party without the assistance of those sticky red-and-white badges proclaiming… HELLO MY NAME IS… David Krejci, center for the Boston Bruins.

Will Luongo hit 11 shutouts? Will Gaborik play another game? We make a few wagers on the 2009 part of the NHL season.
While hockey will always be my soulmate, I must admit my mistress is the pigskin. And a big part of my not-so-secret affair with football, both U.

With children everywhere hopefully finding sticks and gloves under the tree, we take a stab at a Christmas classic.
On the first day of Christmas, the Hockey Gods sent to me, a new set of Bobby Orr knees. On the second day of Christmas, the Hockey Gods sent to me, two dropped gloves, and a new set of Bobby Orr knees.

Continuing our look back at some of the NHL's most recent father-son combos, the Stastnys are well represented.
As I did last week and will again on Jan. 3, here are some of the NHL’s more recent father-son combos. Some, like the first family listed, are sure to be familiar, while other duos may not be so well known.

The long family lines that have run through the NHL's history has made a large hockey community a rather small world.
The hockey community is a close-knit one and that intimacy is only strengthened by the shared bloodlines that have run through the generations.

We're just passed the first marker of the NHL season, a good place to start awarding players for their early-season play.
Every NHL club has played at least 25 percent of its games, so it's the perfect time to give the NHL’s top early-season performers their due (based on the NHL’s year-end awards).

To make sure the right call is being made, NHL officials should be allowed to conference after a penalty like other sports allow.
Let me start off by stating this is in no way meant to be a rant against NHL referees and linesmen. For the most part, the men in stripes do an admirable job adjudicating a fast-paced and sometimes frantic sport and should be commended for their work.
