In the final part of the six-part series, we scan the potential UFAs who will be available from the Atlantic in 2009.
My associate Adam Proteau deemed the Atlantic Division the second-best in the NHL and who am I to disagree? Other than the Islanders, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see any of the Flyers, Rangers, Penguins or Devils atop the division (or conference, even) when all is said and done.

Home to the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Central also has a few intriguing names who could become UFAs next summer.
The Wings are a lock for top spot in the division, but the Hawks look poised to challenge the Preds for the No. 2 position and the Windy City’s first playoff berth in six seasons.

Continuing a series of examining who the potential UFAs in 2009 are, the Northeast Division is led by a few notable Habs.
After a surprise 2007-08 campaign, expectations are rightfully high in la belle Province. But with four prominent players scheduled for unrestricted free agency on July 1, 2009, it could be this year or bust in Montreal.

In Part 3 of a six-part series, we rundown the list of potential UFAs from the Northwest Division for the summer of 2009.
Any one of four teams could claim top spot in the Northwest Division this season (sorry, Colorado) and that team just might have to win it to get into the playoffs.

In Part 2 of a series looking forward to next year's free agent crop, we look at the Southeast Division.
Despite being known as the league’s whipping boy, the Southeast Division is still home to some prominent potential 2009 unrestricted free agents – especially if Florida’s Jay Bouwmeester gets to arbitration.

When building an NHL team today, you have to keep tomorrow in mind. So here's Part 1 of a look forward to next year's potential free agent crop.
Teams still have work to do filling out their rosters for next season, but with finances of paramount importance in the post-lockout NHL, it’s crucial to keep an eye on the distant future as well.

David Poile has done a fantastic job this summer in keeping his own players, and on Thursday Edward talked with the GM about the Predators.
It has been no secret I think David Poile is doing a phenomenal job this summer, specifically in getting UFA goalie Dan Ellis (two years, $1.

Respect for Hossa... $22M for Hainsey?... the Zherdev trade... More praise for Poile... Mats' money... and Tampa's future.
Some random and not-so-random thoughts and postulations on the first couple of days of the NHL’s free agent frenzy…
• What does desperation smell like? To Don Waddell, it smells like $22.

It's still early, but based on the moves Nashville GM David Poile has pulled off so far this off-season, he has to be in the running for executive of the year in 2009.
I don’t know what kind of incriminating photos David Poile has of Dan Ellis, but whatever it is, it has to be nasty.
Because, quite frankly, there’s no other explanation for Ellis putting his John Hancock on a deal worth far less than he could have snagged on the open market after July 1.

One of the many trade rumors swirling around the draft has Patrick Marleau finally leaving San Jose, but the Sharks deserve another shot under a new coach.
No other time – aside from before the trade deadline – does the rumor mill churn with such fervor as in the days leading up to the NHL Entry Draft.

Calder Cup champs led by vets, supported by youngsters... Kevin Lowe makes things interesting... Award parity... and the Thursday Larf.
A few unrelated musings bouncing around my head in the weeks following the playoffs.
WOLVES IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING
The Atlanta Thrashers’ playoff experience may be limited to a four-game sweep at the hands of the Rangers last season, but their AHL affiliates’ recent championship has to bode well for the future of the big franchise.

The Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe have been awarded and here are our picks for the best players in the final.
Congratulations to the Red Wings on a well-deserved Stanley Cup championship.
Despite a pair of lackluster games to start the final, the Detroit-Pittsburgh tilt lived up to its billing as one of the best series in recent memory.
