The NHL is starting to get away from hiring known names and making way for a new wave of coaching candidates.
I have no idea who New York Islanders GM Garth Snow talked to before hiring Scott Gordon as his new coach, but I do know John Stevens and Bruce Boudreau served as great references.

The WJC is coming to Saskatoon and Regina in 2010. And that's reason to celebrate.
Cold as Canada’s prairies can be in January, it warms my heart to hear the World Junior Championship is returning there.
Hockey Canada has announced the 2010 world juniors will be co-hosted by Saskatoon and Regina.

While Mark Streit can't hurt the Islanders and will certainly help their power play, he's not going to carry this team into the playoffs.
In one respect, the union of Mark Streit and the New York Islanders makes a lot of sense because Streit can play multiple positions and the Islanders need help everywhere.

When it comes to free agency and the salary cap world, sometimes the best money spent is the money you don't spend at all.
The NHL calendar is broken into three chunks: the regular season, the post-season and, the portion beginning tomorrow, the silly season.
July 1 marks the day a good number of quality players become unrestricted free agents, clear to sign their services over to any one of the 30 teams.

Montreal GM Bob Gainey is trying to set up a meeting with Mats Sundin. If he can sign him, Sundin would do wonders for the Canadiens' Stanley Cup drive.
The Montreal Canadiens need Mats Sundin.
They need his 6-foot-5, 230-pound frame up the middle to finally clog what’s been a gaping hole in their lineup for what feels like forever.

Soccer is the beautiful game and hockey is the coolest game, so each should take something from the other to become even better.
Soccer balls are actually pretty standard equipment at hockey games. Lots of NHL players – even ones whose first language is English – warm up before games by bouncing a soccer ball with teammates to get the muscles loose and the blood flowing.

It’s late May, so we must be talkin’ Atlanta Thrashers – just not in the context of the NHL playoffs, obviously.
When the Thrashers said their goodbyes this spring, I wonder if any of them hesitated to say ‘enjoy your summer’ to Kari Lehtonen.
