If the NHL and NHLPA take charge and introduce the most effective and transparent drug-testing policy, it would earn greater friendship and respect...and "whoa" Brent Burns.
From a sports fan’s perspective, the Roger Clemens-Brian McNamee congressional hearing soap opera was compelling and titillating, in a detached sort of way.

A word of caution for those teams thinking that throwing in the towel today will bring them a Stanley Cup in the near future.
You’re the GM of a foundering NHL team in mid-February, your club’s chances of making the playoffs are about as good as Sean Avery winning a congeniality competition and your franchise’s fandom is clamoring for trades before the deadline.

You hear it all the time - the All-Star Game isn't as good as it used to be. But perhaps the the league's showcase game hasn't changed as much as the perception of it.
The night they played the NHL All-Star Game in Atlanta, a local cable channel was also airing a "classic," the 1970 affair in St. Louis.

While fans of other teams in the West aren't pleased with the Ducks adding Niedermayer and Selanne, the team hasn't done anything wrong.
Teemu Selanne’s reported imminent return to Anaheim has fans in rival cities crying “what the Duck!”
At issue for the complainers is a legal manipulation of the salary cap and contentions the Ducks are getting an unfair advantage by injecting players of Selanne’s and Scott Niedermayer’s ilk midway through the season.

The league deserves credit for trying to add more excitment to the All-Star Weekend, but they could do more... and good on Bobby Clarke for speaking his mind, even if he's wrong about Steve Downie.
The NHL is saying yes to razzle-dazzle, introducing a revamped skills competition at the All-Star Game that features an anything goes shootout battle, complete with celebrity judges.

Lightning strikes in the best player category as we hand out awards for the 2007 calender year... and Avery ruffles some feathers north of the border.
Sidney Crosby was named the Canadian male athlete of the year. He won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP in 2006-07. The Hockey News just recently selected him as its choice for most powerful and influential person in the game.

The Leafs don't owe their captain a trade to a contender, but even if they do swing a deal there's no guarantee they'll get a good return.
When the chatter in Toronto involving a potential Mats Sundin trade was at its noisiest, several commentators suggested the Maple Leafs “owed it” to Sundin to pedal him to a contender.

Carey Price looks like Montreal's goalie of the future, so they'd be wise not to risk that by trying to make him the present savior.
I was sitting in the Air Canada Centre press box watching the Habs battle the Maple Leafs when Toronto’s Jason Blake made a swift and deft rush, only to have his shot stopped by Carey Price.
