Retired veteran NHL referee Kerry Fraser talks about the 10-minute misconduct he was asked to hand out.
I called Kerry Fraser the other day intending to ask just three or four questions about his new book, The Final Call, wanting to keep things relatively brief during a hectic week at the office.

Every year one team catches the eye and heart of this author and this year that team is the ol' Blue and White.
Most years about this time, I find myself developing a soft spot for a team, one I quietly pull for, one typically cast in the underdog mould.

Fans and crowds at English sporting matches have a whole different dynamic than anything seen in North America.
Several years ago, I had the privilege of attending a hockey game in England, my ever-so-brief home and native land.
The contest was between arch-rivals Sheffield and Nottingham and I loved the experience, not so much for the calibre of play, but more for the atmosphere in the arena.

Not since the lockout has the league got together like this to try out new rules, but it should be done more frequently.
They haven’t yet dropped a puck at the NHL’s research and development camp, but already the event is a winner.
That’s because regardless of what transpires, the league has scored a PR victory, at the very least projecting the perception of openness to progress.

Chicago will surely be hurt by the moves they've been forced to make, but that's exactly the cap's intention: to level the playing field.
A dismantling or a fine-tuning? You say BUFF-lin, I say Bye-FUG-lien.
The roster overhaul of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks that continued into the start of free agency season is not a surprise, but it begs a couple questions.

With so many teams in today's NHL, it's not hard to find teams who haven't won in a long time, or ever... and why Marian Hossa may snap his own curse.
If the favored Blackhawks defeat the Flyers and win their first Stanley Cup since 1961, the city of Chicago, naturally, will be tickled pink.

Because the rule is so vague and inconsistent, the NHL should ban any goals off the skate so everyone can be on the same page.
It’s as much a part of the playoffs as overtime, line-matching and face-washing.
Every spring, as NHL games get magnified, the spotlight shines more intensely on referees as they stride to the timekeeper’s bench, pick up that antique known as a land line and chat with the boys in Toronto about controversial plays.

No player was more key to his team's success than the Sabres No. 1 keeper and the fact he's not nominated for NHL MVP is absurd.
It was predictable, but somehow that didn’t lessen my befuddlement when the NHL news release materialized in my inbox on Thursday. The subject line read:
“Crosby, Ovechkin and Sedin Named Hart Trophy Finalists”
Uh, guys, didn’t you miss someone? You know, that goalie in the Northeast Division whose team may have competed for Taylor or Tyler, not the Stanley Cup, if not for his disproportionate contributions?
It’s not that Sid, Alex and Henrik didn’t have terrific seasons.

While the third game of the Sens-Pens opening round series was far from pretty painting, there were some brush strokes worth talking about.
Of all the great games in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs, this wasn’t one of them.
Unless you’re a fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins or Ottawa Senators, or have some other vested interest, Game 3 of their first round series was a bit of a yawner, characterized by a dearth of offense and scoring chances, particularly in the first two periods.

Jose Theodore and the Caps goalies are getting a bad rap, but recent history suggests you don't need an all-star netminder to win.
The Washington Capitals are steamrolling towards the Presidents’ Trophy and have emerged as a slim odds-on favorite to win the Stanley Cup.

If the NHL is serious about cutting down on the number of head injuries players suffer, they should investigate seriously the impact of fighting.
Competition committee review and Board of Governors approval pending, the NHL took some baby steps this week in its quest to reduce concussions.

Many are critical of the gap between the U.S. and Canada and the rest of the pack, but eliminating the women's game would be folly.
When we were designing our Olympics preview special issue, Chasing Glory, a few months back – and having some challenges making elements fit on a particular page – one of my colleagues turned to me and offered as a way to save space, “For the women’s schedule, we only need one line: the gold medal game.
