The recent hazing incident, the visor debate and more are examples of where hockey is behind modern society.
Sometimes I think of the hockey establishment/culture and society at large as two neighboring tectonic plates, squeezing up against each other from time to time and causing the game’s ground to quake when they do.

Phil Kessel, Semyon Varlamov, Dany Heatley and Brent Burns were all part of controversial trades, but in the end, we won't know who won for years.
Last year, a former NHLer and alumnus of the Toronto Maple Leafs called me to talk about Phil Kessel, who at the time was stumbling through a scoreless streak and, as usual to that point in his career, was an absolute non-factor in terms of backchecking and defense.

Realignment is coming and it's time the slow-moving NHL picks up the pace and moves into the modern era by ditching divisions.

After a difficult summer, it's great to finally have the game we all love back for another year.
Spend enough of your life covering the professional hockey business and you’re bound to get a little jaded. We don’t forget how fortunate we are, but it’s only natural the demands of your job encroach on and dilute the love for the game you had as a kid.

After running down his picks for the West last week, Adam Proteau tells you who he thinks will make the playoffs in 2012.
Yes, it’s time for my pre-season predictions - the time when many of you write in angrily accusing me of hating your team (or jinxing it by praising it too much) and when I giggle quietly to myself at the lather many of you have worked yourself into.

Far from being the untouchable idols they're often painted as, NHLers face the same difficulties any of us do.
I remember the first time I realized NHL players weren’t superhuman immortals: the day Pelle Lindbergh died in a horrific car crash. It was November of 1985 and I was a 13-year-old who thought the world of guys who could play the game at its ultimate level.

While the topic of head trauma has come to the fore with 'Sid the Kid' out for an extended period, it should have been that way already.
As the hysteria surrounding Sidney Crosby’s future approaches Justin Bieber-possibly-breaking-up-with-Selena-Gomez levels, there is no shortage of hockey fans ready to burst into tears and melt their mascara at the thought of losing the game’s matinee idol thanks to ongoing concussion symptoms.

At the NHL's second research and development camp many new rules are tested, but this year it appears as though the first of these will be implemented in the regular season.
A serving of news with a side of views is on the menu today.
SERVING OF NEWS: The first session of the NHL’s two-day research and development camp showed how important the process has become to the league in only its second year of operation.

Instead of being defined by the logo on the jersey, NHL teams need to do a better job of finding a unique way to brand themselves.
In hockey, as in life, image counts, often in large amounts. Ask Gary Bettman, Sean Avery, or the Islanders’ abominable old Captain Highliner jersey.

An injection of confidence is helping James van Riemsdyk establish a big-man presence and has him primed step up for the Flyers.
In the NHL’s days of yore, when men were men and men who stood in front of the opposition’s net were very sore men, the standard power forward was a big, bulky type whose strength was strength.
