The Penguins are down to their last strike – and with Pittsburgh’s key cog Evgeni Malkin looking very much like the biggest whiffer of the series, the end of the 2008 post-season could come as soon as Game 5 Monday in Detroit.

Good to see the Pens fight back... some pre-game hilarity... and Mats Sundin's road to becoming the most hated man in T.O.
Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final was easily the best game of the series, thanks mostly to Sidney Crosby’s offensive heroics and Marc-Andre Fleury’s prowess in the Penguins net.

Not exactly a wildly entertaining Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final between the Penguins and Red Wings, was it?
But it did have a handful of exciting moments and it also played out just as I suspected – that is, with the Pens looking much like the shellshocked Ottawa Senators against Anaheim last year.

For me and a few other people I’ve spoken with who work in the hockey business, the true test of the 2007-08 Detroit Red Wings was never really going to begin until the Western Conference final did.

Tom Renney forgot a key playoff rule when filling out his lineup card and it came back to sink New York in deep trouble.
I like Tom Renney. A lot. Good guy, savvy coach, hockey lifer.
With that out of the way, I feel fully within my rights as an honest observer to observe that the Rangers coach’s decision to insert Ryan Hollweg into New York’s lineup for Tuesday’s tilt against Pittsburgh may wind up costing his team their second round playoff series – and himself his job.

Game 2 of the Eastern semifinal was a Rangers-style defense-first game, but the Penguins adapted quickly and took a 2-0 series lead.
Little by little, the Pittsburgh Penguins and their talented young starting goaltender are putting the league on notice. Their message:
