John Tortorella was let down a little too nicely by the Lightning... Tiger Woods not a hockey fan... players need controversy... and why can't Balsille get a team?
• I think comedian George Carlin is one of the great minds of our time. And one of my favorite bits of his centers around the needless softening/wimpification of language.

The Penguins are the latest in a long line of superstar also-rans... and the failure of the Long Island Ruslan experiment no surprise.
The Penguins are down to their last strike – and with Pittsburgh’s key cog Evgeni Malkin looking very much like the biggest whiffer of the series, the end of the 2008 post-season could come as soon as Game 5 Monday in Detroit.

Good to see the Pens fight back... some pre-game hilarity... and Mats Sundin's road to becoming the most hated man in T.O.
Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final was easily the best game of the series, thanks mostly to Sidney Crosby’s offensive heroics and Marc-Andre Fleury’s prowess in the Penguins net.

Detroit's experience negates Roberts' return... Bettman's "State of the League"... and hockey not Canada's game.
Not exactly a wildly entertaining Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final between the Penguins and Red Wings, was it?
But it did have a handful of exciting moments and it also played out just as I suspected – that is, with the Pens looking much like the shellshocked Ottawa Senators against Anaheim last year.

Dave Andrews and his league is on point about mandatory visors... and the truth in humor.
Caught an interesting debate Tuesday between Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli and American Hockey League president Dave Andrews on TSN’s Off The Record program over visor use at the highest levels of hockey.

If there was any doubt which team in the West was best, there isn't any more after Motown's impressive Game 3 showing.
For me and a few other people I’ve spoken with who work in the hockey business, the true test of the 2007-08 Detroit Red Wings was never really going to begin until the Western Conference final did.

Philly looks cooked, but the Stars can still shine... have a question for Gary B.?... and Adam Proteau, notorious gigolo.
Another great weekend of playoff hockey wrapped up in Pittsburgh Sunday, with the Red Wings and Penguins both staking out 2-0 series leads in the Western and Eastern Conference finals.

Wishing Dion Phaneuf would marry right... Why can't Balsillie and the NHL get along?... and a fond farewell to Chris Botta.
What’s this? Actress Elisha Cuthbert is seen in the arms of another famous NHLer?
The lucky s.o.b. this time is Flames star Dion Phaneuf, who I was hoping would be saving himself – I’ll give you a few seconds to stop snickering – for that chest-beating, Vegas-inhabiting, cheesy Canadian music star.

The Rangers were able to mount comebacks, but unable to finish the job... disappearing whistles... and who does Sidney Crosby look like?
• To their credit, the New York Rangers did not fall to the ground and beg for mercy at any point in their second round playoff series against the Penguins.

Tom Renney forgot a key playoff rule when filling out his lineup card and it came back to sink New York in deep trouble.
I like Tom Renney. A lot. Good guy, savvy coach, hockey lifer.
With that out of the way, I feel fully within my rights as an honest observer to observe that the Rangers coach’s decision to insert Ryan Hollweg into New York’s lineup for Tuesday’s tilt against Pittsburgh may wind up costing his team their second round playoff series – and himself his job.

Game 2 of the Eastern semifinal was a Rangers-style defense-first game, but the Penguins adapted quickly and took a 2-0 series lead.
Little by little, the Pittsburgh Penguins and their talented young starting goaltender are putting the league on notice. Their message:
We’re learning.

Blown calls and missing whistles reflect poorly on the league... and Martin Biron proves he belongs.
Some of you may be aware of my feelings about the futility that is complaining too much about NHL officiating. But I never said it’s wrong to complain every once in a while.

"Probably not. Their depth and our play right now...it doesn't look too good."
- Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, when asked if his team could come back from a 3-1 series deficit against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
