They're the lines many NHLers fall back on when they're at a loss for words, but the hockey world would be a better place if we struck the following six sayings from the language.
Unfortunately, clichés are as much a part of the hockey world as any vulcanized mound of rubber or composite stick composed of uncooked spaghetti.

On the eve of free agency the Maple Leafs traded for Kris Versteeg, with Tomas Kaberle still on the block.
Although the Much Music headquarters should now be placed on high alert, the Kris Versteeg to-the-Maple-Leafs trade is going to make a lot of otherwise miserable Toronto sports fans very happy.

Dana White thinks his sport is better, but that's clearly not the case... and Proteau enters social networking.
• So UFC impresario Dana White thinks his brand of entertainment is “more exciting than hockey,” does he?
If White means his mixed-martial arts fighters provide more of an adrenaline rush than does the NHL’s ham-fisted, dancing bear routines, I’ll give him that.

San Jose outplayed Chicago in Game 1, but solid play from Antti Niemi and one shaky goal from the Sharks keeper was the difference.
The story of Game 1 of the NHL’s Western Conference Final between Chicago and San Jose really depends on who’s doing the telling.

Blowing up the roster was a viable option after another playoff debacle last season, but instead a couple of minor adjustments have kept San Jose swimming straight.
At the conclusion of the first round of last year’s playoffs, San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson easily could have jammed sticks of TNT in his team’s roster and made a mint by holding an auction to decide which fan got to strike the first flame.

An agitator in his time, Lemieux is unlike Sean Avery or Matt Cooke because of the statistics he piled up along the way.
To wonder whether there’s a player in the 2010 post-season who is the equal to Claude Lemieux is not to grasp the impact the legendary, polarizing NHLer had on the ice.

Should we feel good or bad for the success of the Pens shift disturber after his hit on Marc Savard... how to get suspended... and Laperriere's wise choice.
I was of two minds watching Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke help screw the lid shut on the Ottawa Senators’ season Saturday night.
One part of me was pleased to see Cooke enjoy some personal success after his deplorable hit on Boston’s Marc Savard caused some to paint him as the worst of hockey’s bad eggs.

For a No. 1 goalie, Roberto Luongo gets pulled an awful lot and it makes you wonder if he really is elite and worth a 12-year contract.
As Roberto Luongo got the walnut treatment – shelled, swallowed and swept into the nearest trash receptacle – in Vancouver’s 5-3, Game 3 loss to Los Angeles Monday night, all I could think about was a conversation I had a year or so ago with a former NHL goalie who believed the Canucks’ star goaltender wasn’t as good as his reputation and salary suggest.

Phoenix has faced more than their share of adversity this season and never back down. That was the case again Sunday in a 4-2 win over the Red Wings.
All season long, the Phoenix Coyotes needed neither stable ownership nor sellout crowds to be successful on NHL ice rinks. And after Game 3 of their Western Conference series against the Detroit Red Wings, you can add Shane Doan to the list of components not necessary for a Yotes victory.

Back in the playoffs after a layoff, Phoenix and Colorado fly in the face of the favorites to take down tight Game 1 action.
After the upstart seasons both teams had, it was fitting on the opening night of the playoffs to see the Phoenix Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche serve notice they wouldn’t be the respective pushovers of the Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks.

On paper, the Lightning looked much improved this season, but off-ice troubles have been keeping this team down.
I really wanted to be praising the Tampa Bay Lightning this time of year. Shame they’ve left me no choice but to bury them.
The Florida Panthers are a franchise I expect to be underwhelmed by each and every season – and they never let me down come springtime.
