On the heels of Montreal’s stunning upset of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia becoming just the sixth NHL team to force a Game 7 when down 3-0 in series, I have some thoughts.

A week away from the office wasn't supposed to be a week away from hockey, but that's exactly what it turned out to be.
It was a furious night of action Monday with two teams eliminated and another pushing its series to a seventh game. And for this weary traveler, it was a merciful reprieve from having to rely on ESPN for my hockey fix.

As the Flyers and Senators took Game 1 on the road, special teams proved to play a big role in the unexpected victories.
Sloppy play and nerves characterized the opening frames in both early games as the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs kicked off Wednesday night. But things settled down relatively quickly and, as is often the case in the playoffs, special teams became the story of the night.

I don’t know if Thrashers fans have their own version of the Dirty Bird or the Tomahawk Chop, but if they do, Tuesday is the night to get out, get loud and be proud.

Even though the on-ice product is great, there are many off-ice issues troubling the NHL and the best way to deal with them is to do one big overhaul.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the NHL could just flip a switch and make its franchise woes disappear? Just do it all in one fell swoop; sell, relocate, contract, whatever.

Ovie's hit on Brian Campbell is worthy of a five-game suspension, but the league is unlikely to take serious action against one of its most marketable assets.
He’s had more game misconducts than any other NHLer this season, two for boarding and once for kneeing. He was criticized for his treatment of a fan with a camera at the Olympics.

The NHL should look to the NFL's "unnecessary roughness" rule in order to curb excessive violent hits on the ice.
If Matt Cooke’s hit on Marc Savard has done anything other than prove once again that Cooke is one of the NHL’s most dangerous players, it has shone a glaring light on the fact the NHL needs to change its rules surrounding bodychecking.

Expectations were low for Colorado and Phoenix heading into this season, but now both teams have good reason to wheel and deal.

It’s become obvious that each time Canada ices its best at the Olympics the same thing happens: everyone not wearing goalie pads defers to everyone else not wearing goalie pads.
