Campbell's Cuts: Jones suspension sends wrong message

by Ken Campbell - October 29, 2007 2:33 PM EDT

The hit may not have been as malicious as the ones his two teammates handed out earlier this season, but the league still needed to come down hard.
It is, of course, insane to suggest the Randy Jones hit from behind on Patrice Bergeron Saturday afternoon is anything even remotely close to the dangerous cheap shots delivered by Steve Downie and Jesse Boulerice.

Campbell's Cuts: Winds of change blowing in Chicago

by Ken Campbell - October 22, 2007 11:18 PM EDT

With Rocky Wirtz calling the shots and tons of young talent, things are looking up in Chicago.
Rocky Wirtz has officially only been on the job for 17 days now, but he's quickly putting together a body of work that might make him worthy of executive of the year in the NHL.

Campbell's Cuts: Assisted assists

by Ken Campbell - October 15, 2007 4:20 PM EDT

It's time for the league to stop the phantom assist and award points only when players deserve it.
When Wayne Gretzky was in the midst of breaking every scoring record known to man while playing for the Edmonton Oilers in the 1980s, there was a longstanding joke that whenever someone scored a goal in the province of Alberta, Gretzky would be credited with an assist.

Campbell's Cuts: Suspensions good, but could be better

by Ken Campbell - October 12, 2007 12:00 AM EDT

The league is sending the right message by handing out long bans to Boulerice and Downie, but keeping them off the ice is one thing, hitting them in the pocketbook is another.
If you care about hockey, you can't be anything but encouraged by the recent harsh suspensions to Steve Downie and Jesse Boulerice of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Campbell's Cuts: Giving thanks

by Ken Campbell - October 8, 2007 10:56 AM EDT

With the Thanksgiving holiday upon us it's only appropriate to list some of the things worth giving kudos.
I've been told on a number of occasions that I hate hockey. And that's by people who actually like me. Even one of my colleagues, Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun, refers to me as, "the little ball of hate.

Campbell's Cuts: Bettman's silence speaks volumes

by Ken Campbell - September 26, 2007 11:39 PM EDT

The commissioner should have stepped in and personally suspended Steve Downie.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has already established the precedent and the fact that he refuses to use it on Steve Downie represents another in the many blights on his leadership of the NHL.

Campbell's Cuts: Fighting for jobs

by Ken Campbell - September 20, 2007 12:46 AM EDT

Scraps are way up this pre-season, as are resulting injuries, but not to worry, it's just whoiswhat KO'ing whatisname.
Sadly, the hockey world will have to soldier on the next little while without Andrew Archer or Matt Carkner, whoever the hell they are. Actually, Archer and Carkner are two players, and we use that term very, very loosely – who have already been hurt in hockey fights this pre-season.

Campbell's Cuts: Missing money

by Ken Campbell - September 6, 2007 1:16 PM EDT

Brad Stuart could have had more if he wasn't greedy... Leafs screw London... and look out for LaBarbera.
In a new collective bargaining agreement that still seems tilted toward the players, there are still some rare times when the players come out on the losing end of things.

Campbell's Cuts: NHLPA needs star power

by Ken Campbell - August 31, 2007 12:07 AM EDT

The NHL's best and brightest will have to get involved if the union is to become a force again.
Prior to their three days of meetings in Toronto, the NHL Players' Association talked at length about engaging the members and a refreshing and newfound interest among the players in the union's affairs.

Campbell's Cuts: Big E ready to hang 'em up

by Ken Campbell - August 29, 2007 12:00 AM EDT

It's all but official, Lindros is retiring... Turco tells the truth... and Canada's winning ways a problem.
Eric Lindros will retire from the NHL this fall. The only question concerns when he will make a formal announcement. It could come anytime after the players wrap up their meetings Friday, but there is absolutely no doubt that Lindros will end one of the most controversial careers in NHL history very soon.

Campbell's Cuts: Summit Series? So what.

by Ken Campbell - August 24, 2007 12:53 AM EDT

Lots of people are pretty excited about Canada vs. Russia, but not me...and Cliff finally gets a break.
So, this is what it has come toÂ…Friday's big news about the Canadian junior team for the Super Series against Russia was how they conducted a bodychecking drill.

Campbell's Cuts: Team Russia won't be a pushover

by Ken Campbell - July 20, 2007 12:13 AM EDT

Canada will have their hands full when the two countries pit their best junior players against each other.
After essentially sandbagging their exhibition competitions against Canadian junior teams for the past four years, it looks as though the Russians will have a legitimate team compete in the Canada-Russia Super Series later this summer.
