Steve Yzerman has been named Canada's GM for the world championship, paving the way for him to take on the same role with Detroit some day.
Hockey Canada obviously didn't want to mess with a good thing. Now the next obvious question is, will the owners of the Detroit Red Wings do the same?
Former Red Wings star and current Wings vice-president Steve Yzerman will return for a second stint as the GM for Canada's entry in the World Championship this spring after being named to the post in a news conference Monday morning.

With the team in a freefall, it's time for the Maple Leafs to trade their big names if they are serious about ever becoming contenders again.
Much has been made about the uncertain future of Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin. It's not really all that uncertain, though. Chances are heavily in favor of Sundin wearing a uniform other than the blue and white by the time the trade deadline passes Feb.

Suspensions aren't doing the trick, but will an injury to one of their own finally curb the Flyers' reckless and dangerous play?
It’s quite obvious that 52 games worth of suspensions from the NHL’s head office has done nothing to convince the Philadelphia Flyers and some of their players that they’re either crazy or reckless, or both.

Enough is enough. The league should expel Chris Simon after Saturday's incident.
It certainly wasn't Chris Simon's most heinous on-ice act of aggression – after all, we're talking about a guy who has served 35 games worth of suspensions for the following: Two-handing an opponent in the face; cross-checking another in the throat; kneeing; elbowing; cross-checking an opponent and then jumping on him and punching him; and uttering a racial slur towards an African-American opponent.

It's inevitable the Leafs will fire their GM, but if they don't name a suitable successor they'll be doing more damage than good.
That the Toronto Maple Leafs are on the verge of firing their GM is completely understandable and predictable. The John Ferguson era in Toronto has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster, chock-full of terrible player personnel decisions that will take his eventual successor years to remedy.

Now that the Ottawa Senators have signed Jason Spezza to a long-term deal to effectively lock up the core of their team for the long-term future, it's time for them now to do something bold.
