While NFL players are showing a sign of unity before some games, don't expect the same gesture from NHL players a year from now.
Wasn’t it touching and inspirational to see NFL Players “stand as one” this past weekend with their single-finger salute prior to the first games of the season? If NHL players decide to do the same thing a year from now, please consider yourself permitted to hurl at them whatever is in your hand at the time, including blunt objects.

After Donald Fehr listed his demands to take the job the NHLPA has been slow to react and me be re-thinking their potential new hire.
So let’s see if we’ve got this straight. The players are now getting a case of the humm-a-na humm-a-nas at the prospect of paying Donald Fehr the same amount of money the Toronto Maple Leafs will give to Colby Armstrong this season?
Actually, Fehr’s demands beyond the $3 million-a-year stipend have sent up a number of red flags amongst the rank and file.

While some of the ideas discussed may seem ridiculous, not all of them will come to fruition. But the fact hockey's caretakers take time to talk can only help.
Like a lot of other people, I rolled my eyes at some of the potential rule changes that were given a test run at the NHL’s research and development camp last week.

After five years of trying to keep goalies in their crease, it's time for another change to allow room for excitement.
All right, this was the plan: In an attempt to bolster the argument that the NHL should abolish the behind-the-net trapezoid, I was going to go to your YouTube there, type in ‘Goalie Fail,’ then watch the deluge of hilarious gaffes that led to goals from bumbling goalies coming out of the net to play the puck.

In effectively replacing team president Pierre Boivin with Geoffrey Molson, the Canadiens made a somewhat risky move.
Lodged somewhere between the free agent frenzy – yeah, we know it’s a stretch – and the dog days of summer, came the rather quiet and curious announcement by the Montreal Canadiens they are effectively getting rid of team president Pierre Boivin.

Even with four decades – and 18 NHL seasons – behind him, the Detroit Red Wings legend is playing at a superior level.
Nicklas Lidstrom didn't win his seventh Norris Trophy in 2009-10. The upside of that was it prevented the geniuses who organize the NHL’s awards ceremony from spelling his name “Lindstrom,” the way they did two years ago.

Ilya Kovalchuk's 17-year deal with New Jersey was rejected by the league Tuesday night, but what happens next?
The rejection of the Ilya Kovalchuk contract by the NHL is by no means unprecedented. In reality, the league rejects a handful of contracts every year.

While the Kings missed out on a 50-goal scorer, they also missed out on future headaches when they'll have to start managing their money.
One member of the Los Angeles Kings management team wondered how the top executives would be feeling today. No doubt GM Dean Lombardi and his lieutenants are a little on the glum side.
