While NFL players are showing a sign of unity before some games, don't expect the same gesture from NHL players a year from now.
Wasn’t it touching and inspirational to see NFL Players “stand as one” this past weekend with their single-finger salute prior to the first games of the season? If NHL players decide to do the same thing a year from now, please consider yourself permitted to hurl at them whatever is in your hand at the time, including blunt objects.

After Donald Fehr listed his demands to take the job the NHLPA has been slow to react and me be re-thinking their potential new hire.
So let’s see if we’ve got this straight. The players are now getting a case of the humm-a-na humm-a-nas at the prospect of paying Donald Fehr the same amount of money the Toronto Maple Leafs will give to Colby Armstrong this season?
Actually, Fehr’s demands beyond the $3 million-a-year stipend have sent up a number of red flags amongst the rank and file.

With the league and the NHLPA agreeing to a new framework regarding long-term deals, teams are once again saved from themselves...at least for now.
When the NHL finally reached a collective bargaining agreement with its players five years ago, not even in its worst nightmare did it envision teams skirting the salary cap by signing star players to front-loaded contracts with double-figure terms.

With players like James Neal, Marc Staal, Chris Stewart and Carey Price still looking for a contract, teams are finally showing a little restraint.
There are not many areas of the collective bargaining agreement where NHL teams can say they’ve used a whole lot of common sense. But as they’ve found their way in the cap world, their strategy with young players has improved.
