Why spoil the precious moment of the winning team receiving its chalice with the boos the Commish will undoubtedly hear.
Indisputable Fact No. 1: The final game of the 2009 Stanley Cup final will begin Friday in Detroit.
Indisputable Fact No. 2: There will be an NHL champion crowned Friday night, sometime Saturday, or if a lot of things go wrong, late Sunday afternoon.

The league abides by a follow-the-rules edict, but only when it works for them... and Darryl Sutter would be daft to take on the GM-coach role again.
As the NHL marathon creaks to a close, here are a couple mini-columns:
• During his current round of anti-Jim Balsillie-themed public relations, Gary Bettman is going out of his way to note the importance of the hallowed laws that govern owner behavior.

The frequency of games may diminish, but the drama of the conference and Cup finals makes the playoffs better as they go.
Some people will argue the NHL playoffs become less intriguing as the tournament moves toward its conclusion.
That’s not how I see it.

No wonder vigilantism runs the NHL; those in charge of protecting the players continually drop the ball and force players to protect themselves.
I don’t agree with Aaron Ward on everything.
For instance, in September of 2007, in response to The Hockey News’ pre-season prediction his Boston Bruins would finish last in the Eastern Conference, Ward went off on the sportswriting profession using the most intellectually inert argument of them all – the idea only elite-level athletes can comment on the sport in which they excel.

An open letter to the NHL's commissioner explaining why it's in his best interests to back Jim Balsillie's bid for a franchise.
After BlackBerry magnate Jim Balsillie’s latest attempt to purchase an NHL franchise – and the league’s continued reticence to welcome him with open arms – I felt compelled to issue a plea to league commissioner Gary Bettman.

After a poor showing in Round 1, Adam Proteau is back with his tail between his legs for his semifinals picks.
An overly proud person wouldn’t admit to going 3-5 in predicting the first round of this spring’s NHL playoffs. Luckily, too much of this kind of business has prevented your faithful sports-typist from becoming overly proud.

Making good on a bet that the Blue Jackets wouldn't make the playoffs, a day decked out in Union garb turned into an adventure never to be forgotten.
COLUMBUS – Me and my big mouth.
That’s the orifice – with the first and second assists going to my left and right typing hands – that scored me a trip to central Ohio in late April, when the Columbus Blue Jackets played their first-ever home playoff game.

Bracing himself for ferocious feedback, Adam selects who he thinks will be moving on and who should be making tee times.
It’s that time of year once again – the time hockey fans become even more touchy and territorial than ever; the time normally rational folks decide base-level facial grooming is for the birds; and the time THN columnists willingly write up playoff predictions knowing full well that many readers of those predictions will drop any pretense of composure like it’s hot and bombard the comments section with a litany of libels and character assassination.

Manny Legace, who was the starter in St. Louis before being sent to the AHL, has taken this season in stride and is prepared for another NHL shot in 2009-10.
Before anybody starts feeling sorry for Manny Legace – the veteran goalie who was snubbed supremely by the St. Louis Blues and now, from the buses of the American League, watches his former team charge toward the playoffs – they should understand something.

It's one thing to select a team's top performer, but quite another to single out a club's second best.
Around this time of year, you hear lots of debate regarding which NHL player is most valuable to his team. But you never hear much about the players on each team who also would be missed mightily if they were employed elsewhere.

Picking an MVP is easy - sort of - but selecting each team's top second fiddle is no simple task.
Around this time of year, you hear lots of debate regarding which NHL player is most valuable to his team. But you never hear much about the players on each team who also would be missed mightily if they were employed elsewhere.

With 11 players scheduled for unrestricted free agency, GM Bob Gainey will have a lot on his plate leading up to July 1.
In a few crucial ways, this year’s edition of the Montreal Canadiens remind me of last year’s edition of the New York Rangers.
Not that that’s a good thing.

"Probably not. They have too much depth."
