There's this feeling that if Brian Burke were to come to Toronto he would move most of the Europeans, but his track record doesn't show that to be true.
The prevailing opinion seems to be that once Brian Burke takes over the Toronto Maple Leafs, all the Europeans on the team might as well call a real estate agent because they’ll quickly be replaced with big North American guys who can crush skulls with the best of them.

The rescinding of the suspension to Brenden Morrow for his late-game instigator once again shows how the league is letting players police themselves.
Amidst all the excitement surrounding Brian Burke’s departure from Anaheim, there was a rather small item of NHL business that went largely overlooked.

The NHL needs to do something about high hits and checks from behind instead of pointing its finger at the victim.
Clearly, those who don’t think the NHL needs to do something about hits from behind and headshots think the player who is being hit has a responsibility to protect himself and not make himself vulnerable.

If Mats Sundin stays with the Leafs, he'll likely retire as captain. But who is the last to accomplish that feat with every other NHL team?
Count me among those who think there’s still a chance Mats Sundin will play for the Toronto Maple Leafs when he returns to the NHL. I’m not saying that’s what will definitely happen, but I do know Sundin sees himself above all as a Maple Leaf.

Olli Jokinen is about to set the mark for most games played without appearing in the playoffs, surpassing Guy Charron.
There is a rather delicious irony in the fact the Phoenix Coyotes are scheduled to host the Florida Panthers Saturday night.
Barring an injury, Olli Jokinen of the Coyotes will play his 735th career game that night against his former team.

The NHL and KHL continue to battle over player contracts, while on the home front the Eastern and Western conferences go toe-to-toe.
Did you ever get the impression these guys from the Kontinental League are just making things up as they go along?
The latest installment in what is becoming a complete farce involves Montreal Canadiens prospect Pavel Valentenko, who was granted a leave of absence from the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American League to attend to family matters, then, according to the Moscow Dynamo website, signed a three-year deal to play in the KHL.

It's a common misconception that the 10-game mark means a rookie is one step closer to UFA status, so we clear it up.
Here we are, right around the 10-game mark of the season and there are so many questions. Where did all the time go? Wasn’t Dallas supposed to be better than this? Wasn’t St.

Last year's MVP is off to a super-slow start that has people wondering what's happened to the league's top player.
Suffice it to say, last season’s MVP and scoring champion isn’t the best player in the NHL at the moment. What’s even more shocking, though, is he’s not even the best player on his team.

No matter if you like fights or not, having one break out after every clean bodycheck makes a mockery of the practice.
Those who often lament the NHL becoming the “No Hitting League” – hey, I don’t see it either – should take guys like Rene Bourque and Alexandre Picard and slap them upside the head.

Lightning co-owner Len Barrie’s son is tearing up the Western League and has eyes on being a 2009 first-rounder.
Tyson Barrie insists there are a lot of differences between him and his rather famous father, but one thing the two certainly have in common is an ability to produce points – at least at the Western League level.

The league missed a perfect opportunity to show it won't tolerate dirty play by not adding extra games to Hollweg's automatic suspension.
If there’s anyone out there who can explain the NHL’s rationale when it comes to meting out discipline, please contact The Hockey News as soon as possible.

The NHL is promoting last night's celebration as a success, but putting the Cup upside down is nothing but a joke.
Ya know, the NHL really tries, but you have to wonder sometimes if these guys get it. They have a colossal screw-up with the Stanley Cup opening night, then on their website, they run a piece gushing about Face-Off Rocks 2008 – whatever the hell that was supposed to be – as though it was the second coming of The Beatles.
