Varlamov to spend Wednesday night in jail

Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov will wake up in jail Thursday and answer to domestic violence charges which include kidnapping, according to Denver Police.

Varlamov turned himself into police Wednesday night and was arrested on second-degree kidnapping charges and third-degree assault charges, the Denver Post reported. The kidnapping charge is a Class 4 felony and carries a sentence of two to six years in prison according to Colorado statutes. The kidnapping is defined as taking someone and moving them to another place without their consent. They stem from an alleged incident in Denver on Tuesday.

Denver Post reporter Ryan Parker was at the jail where Varlamov is being held and tweeted Varlamov has turned down a request to be interviewed. Parker added officials said he's being held in a cell alone because he's a celebrity. Varlamov is not eligible for bail because of the assault charge and he must see a judge in the morning before he can leave on bail. He has a court date set for Thursday morning.

The Avalanche issued a statement immediately after the news broke letting media know they would not be speaking on the matter: "At this time, and until the conclusion of this investigation, the Avalanche organization will have no further comment on this situation."

Colorado coach Patrick Roy also turned down a Denver Post interview request.

Varlamov is 7-1 this season with a 1.76 goals-against average and .945 save percentage for the surprising 10-1-0 Avalanche. Colorado's next game is in Dallas Friday. It's unclear if Varlamov can leave Colorado once he clears bail.
