THN cover curse watch: Isles, Drouin down and out

Examining the first nine THN issues of volume 67 in late October almost busted the myth of a cover curse, as only a third of our subjects ran into bad luck after gracing our magazine.

Are the black cats, broken mirrors and spilled salt shakers making a comeback, however? Let’s examine our last three covers.

Volume 67, issue 10: John Tavares

Oh dear. The Tavares/Islanders cover story detailed a team on the rise and used a 5-4 road win at Ottawa as its jumping off point. Since then, the Isles are 3-13-2. They’ve lost 10 straight games and also haven’t won a road affair since that Nov. 1 victory over the Sens. Tavares’ offense hasn’t eluded him, but the curse is in full effect here.

Volume 67, issue 11: Seth Jones

It’s totally understandable for a 19-year-old rookie defenseman playing 23-plus minutes a game, but Jones has taken his lumps since the cover story on him ran. We caught up with him in Toronto for the story and he scored against the Leafs the next day, but he has one point and is a minus-6 in eight games since then. Much of his recent dip in production can be attributed to Shea Weber and Kevin Klein each being injured, as they have both played with Jones at different times, but even that is a negative twist of fate we can attribute to the curse (all in good fun).

Volume 67, issue 12: Jacob De La Rose, Jonathan Drouin, Jon Gillies

This is the first cover to illicit an “Oh, COME ON!” from the THN office. Mere hours after we sent the issue off for printing, this happened to Drouin:

And so the curse makes a huge comeback. Also, factoring in a revisionist history, it’s been nothing but downhill for perpetually peppered Leaf goalies Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer since we sported them on the cover. A bad fate has claimed that cover now, too, so the point is reassigned to the curse.
