Seven-year-old fan battling cancer has week to remember thanks to Winnipeg Jets, young boy

A seven-year-old girl who is on her sixth round of chemotherapy in her battle against leukemia had an amazing week thanks to the Winnipeg Jets. But it was an unexpected gesture that made the moment even more heartwarming.

The Winnipeg Jets, and one young fan, have made the past week one to remember for Alyx Delaloye, a seven-year-old girl who is going through her sixth round of chemotherapy in her battle with leukemia. Last week, during Winnipeg’s contest against the Dallas Stars, Delaloye was a guest at the MTS Centre thanks to the Jets’ organization. During the third period, Delaloye became an internet sensation thanks to her appearance on the Jumbotron, when she held up a sign reading, “Chemo by day, Jets by night.” She received a massive ovation from the Winnipeg faithful, including stick taps from the players on the ice. Appearing on the big screen was all Delaloye really wanted – her mother, Jody,

told CBC Manitoba that Alyx had wished she could be on it – but appearing on the screen set off a series of events that made her week even more special.

Post-game, Jets center

Jim Slater said he had seen her on the screen during the game and that he couldn’t wait to meet her and bring her back to another game. “I went home last night and just wanted to find out who she was,” Slater said when meeting with the media the day following the Jets’ game against Dallas. “Hopefully, maybe we get her to another game here, with her and her family, and get her down to meet some of the guys.” “What she’s had to go through, I don’t want to even imagine,” continued Slater. “If we can make her day a little better, a little brighter, that’s a huge thing that us as athletes can do.” And less than a week later, Delaloye was back, again thanks to the Jets. The team brought her into the dressing room where they donned Superman-style t-shirts with Alyx’s name inside the crest. She, along with her family, met several of the players and got a big hug from the Jets’ mascot Mick E. Moose.

Then, during Sunday afternoon’s contest between Los Angeles and Winnipeg, she was spotted in the stands once again. Delaloye had another sign with her, this time with thanking everyone for their support. But the most touching moment came shortly after the game was over. The Jets three-star selections hand out souvenir sticks to children in the stands. A young boy in a Jets jersey in the first few rows who had nabbed the stick during the post-game ceremony walked up the stairs to Delaloye and handed her the stick. Shortly thereafter, Delaloye came back down to the boy, wrapped her arms around him and hugged him, thanking him for his gesture.

Kudos to the Winnipeg Jets and one very caring young man. They absolutely made Delaloye’s day a little brighter with their touching gestures.
