Report: Colorado Avalanche, Coors Field to host outdoor game next seasonReport: Colorado Avalanche, Coors Field to host outdoor game next season

According to Adrian Dater of The Denver Post, the Colorado Avalanche play host to an outdoor game as early as next season.

The game would take place at Coors Field, the home of the MLB’s Colorado Rockies, reports Dater. Though it’s not likely the game would serve as the NHL’s flagship outdoor game, the Winter Classic, it appears the game will be part of the Stadium Series, a concept brought to life in 2013-14.

Last season’s Stadium Series featured the first regular season NHL contest to take place outdoors in the United States west of Illinois when more than 54,000 people watched the Anaheim Ducks defeat the Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.

This season, the NHL is heading back out west with the Stadium Series in a game that will pit the Los Angeles Kings against the San Jose Sharks at Levi’s Stadium, the brand new home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.

It would seem fitting that the next foray into the west will be a Stadium Series in Colorado, and Coors Field is a great venue that can seat over 50,000 people. If there were to be a Winter Classic contest west of Illinois – Chicago hosted the game at Wrigley Field in 2009 – it’s likely either Colorado or Minnesota would be the venue. A game next season in Colorado would be the perfect opportunity for the NHL to gauge the potential of revisiting Denver in the future.

There has been no official confirmation of the outdoor game in Colorado, nor has an opponent announced.
