In The Cards: Topps swung a sweet deal nearly 40 years ago

Hockey fans in the United States were enticed to join the “Topps Sports Club” via an offer solicited on packs of 1975-76 Topps Hockey trading cards.

For $2.50 plus one card wrapper, members would get a newsletter subscription, an 8” x 10” glossy photo of Bobby Clarke and packs of Topps cards before they were available for sale. As a bonus, Club members could also buy a subscription to The Hockey News for the rock-bottom price of $7.95 — a $2.55 savings. Unfortunately, this offer expired 38 years ago.
