All the news and notes from Monday night in the NHL.
Essential Water Cooler
There was a good chunk of last season where it looked like Brad Richards’ NHL career was coming to a sputtering end. Benched by Rangers coach John Tortorella, the former Conn Smythe winner with the bizonkers contract was dying on Broadway. But last night we saw why New York ponied up $60 million for nine years of service as he paced the Rangers to a 3-1 win over L.A. Was the coaching change that brought Alain Vigneault into the fold all B-Rich needed? Hit us up in the comments.
Gotta be Richards. The first of his two goals against L.A. was a sick effort and highly skilled in execution.
Men of the Night
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Edmonton: ‘The Nuge’ was back in his first game since shoulder surgery and was buzzing the net all night. He popped in a goal and got the Oilers started on the comeback trail as they dusted the Devils 5-4 in the shootout.
David Perron, Edmonton: One laser goal in regulation and another in the shootout to seal things off after Jordan Eberle gave Edmonton a lead in the skills competition.
Jaromir Jagr, New Jersey: In a losing effort, Jagr proved he’s still got it, potting a goal for the Devils in what had to be a crushing loss.
Rick Nash, New York Rangers: Strong play from the big guy, who dished out two assists in the Blueshirts’ victory.
Better Luck Next Time
Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles: Wowwwww! Worst goal ever? The best goalie in the world right now looked like Vesa Toskala on this one.
