The Buffalo Sabres debuted their instantly infamous third jerseys and luckily for fashion buffs, the uniforms were not a good luck charm. That and more in our morning recap.
Essential Water Cooler
OK, so let’s talk about those Sabres third jerseys. From afar, when you’re watching on TV and the players are far away, they don’t look so bad. Kinda like a Nashville sweater from a year you can’t identify. Then the closeups come and the details, oh the details. The weird diamond thingy under the collar. The word “Buffalo” directly above a picture of a buffalo just in case you weren’t aware that this was Buffalo. And swords everywhere. So where does this uniform rank in the annals of the NHL? Better or worse than WIld Wing jumping through the ice on Anaheim’s old thirds?
Though it came in a losing cause, Cody Hodgson made a pretty with this tally, even though Buffalo would fall to Detroit 3-1.
Men of the Night
Eric Staal, Carolina: The Senators just didn’t have an answer for Carolina’s big captain, who rumbled all evening and ended up with a goal and two helpers in a 4-1 Canes win over Ottawa.
Jonas Gustavsson, Detroit: ‘The Monster’ had to deal with rampaging Sabres in his crease on multiple occasions, but still held the fort for the Wings. Gustavsson stopped 21 shots for the ‘W.’
Cam Ward, Carolina: Ward made some spectacular saves against a dangerous Ottawa lineup, turning aside 35 to get his Canes a crucial two points in the standings.
Better Luck Next Time
Rough outing for a guy who just got called up from the minors, but Alexander Sulzer has to own it. The Sabres defenseman looked lost at times and then had the misfortune of having a Johan Franzen shot go in off his shin pad for a Wings goal.
