Coyotes’ Hanzal suspended two games for charging

The Phoenix Coyotes will be without the services of center Martin Hanzal for the next two games. And Hanzal has no one but himself to blame for it.

The NHL department of player safety announced Monday a two-game suspension for Hanzal for charging Oilers defenseman Jeff Petry Saturday night. It’s tough for anyone to argue the points made in the league’s explanation video.

As the league makes clear, Hanzal is a repeat offender; in May of 2012, he was suspended for one playoff game for boarding Kings forward Dustin Brown.

Hanzal’s two-game sitdown will cost him $75,609.76 in forfeited salary. As with almost every NHL suspension, I’d argue the league could’ve been harsher with Hanzal. But what do you think? Should the NHL have suspended him for longer, or not at all?
