Yesterday on the blog, we featured Chicago backup goalie Antti Raanta’s Stadium Series mask that he’ll use in this Saturday’s outdoor game. But he likely won’t be playing in the game, so we won’t get to see much of the ‘Eddie the Eagle’ throw back look.

Today we turn our attention to the two starters: Marc-Andre Fleury and Corey Crawford.

Since the game will be played at Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears, the design Fleury is going with perfectly fits the day’s theme. When you think of all-time NFL defences, you think of Chicago’s Monsters of the Midway or Pittsburgh’s Steel Curtain. The two teams are in different conferences and have never met in a Super Bowl, but both franchises are legendary and pride themselves on a strong ‘D.’

So when Fleury enters Soldier Field sporting this Pittsburgh Steelers mask, you better believe it’ll get a reaction from Chicago sports fans.

Marc-Andre Fleury

Fleury’s mask, designed by Stephane Bergeron, is painted to look like someone wearing a Steelers football helmet, with the addition of a Penguins logo on the one side. As far as “human faces on masks” go it doesn’t touch Steve Shields’ nod to Gerry Cheevers from a few years back, but it is a genuine fit with the atmosphere the game will be played in.

As far as Saturday’s starters go, Fleury’s mask one-ups Crawford’s, whose outdoor helmet was also designed by Bergeron.

In fact, I think Crawford’s look is second-best on his team to Raanta. Which of the three helmets do you like most?
