The Colorado Avalanche have acquired center Max Talbot from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for right winger Steve Downie. It will be Downie’s second stint with the Flyers, who drafted him in the first round (29th overall) of the 2005 NHL draft.
The Flyers were expected to begin some sort of shakeup of their struggling team – which currently sits one point out of last place in the Eastern Conference – and it was unlikely they were going to consider a blockbuster deal right away. This transaction qualifies as a minor move, although the Avalanche are assuming more risk, as Talbot has two years remaining on his contract after this season. Downie will earn nearly $1 million more this season, but the 26-year-old is an unrestricted free agent this summer and his expiring contract will provide some much-needed salary cap relief for the Flyers.
What do you think of the deal? Is this the start of bigger moves to come for the Flyers?
