What's the deal with these gimmicky shirts? The ECHL's Bakersfield Condors held a 'Seinfeld' tribute night on Saturday. Players wore jerseys inspired by Jerry Seinfeld's puffy pirate shirt, and play-by-play announcers pulled out every show reference they could muster during the game.

The general manager of the East Coast League’s Bakersfield Condors must be a low-talker, because he somehow convinced his players to wear puffy pirate shirt tribute jerseys for a ‘Seinfeld’ appreciation night on Saturday.

The jerseys were inspired by a gaudy pirate shirt Jerry Seinfeld once accidentally agreed to wear for a TV appearance in an episode of the hit ‘90s sitcom. They were part of ‘Puffy Shirt Jersey Night,’ put on in honour of the 25th anniversary of the show’s first airing on television.

But it didn’t stop at the puffy shirts, because the Condors put character names from the show on the back of their jerseys, and the play-by-play team used those names to call the game. Seinfeld, David Puddy, Kramer, Elaine and The Wiz were all represented. As was a certain proctologist from the show.

To top it all off, they had the show’s ‘Low-talker’ herself, actress Wendel Meldrum, on hand to interview players after the game. And here’s the ‘Puffy Shirt’ episode, to refresh your memory (or catch you up if you haven’t seen it). The ECHL is well-known for gimmicky promotions like this one. Also on Saturday, the Cincinatti Cyclones had a ‘Star Wars’ night, with R2-D2 jerseys to mark the occasion.

The Condors jerseys went up for auction online after the game. Some were snatched up pretty quickly.

The Condors lost the game 2-1 to the Idaho Steelheads.
