Mark Messier may have stepped away from his position with the New York Rangers this summer, but he hasn’t left the game he loves.

Messier has teamed up with Bauer Hockey, Inc., and Hockey Canada as part of their Grow the Game partnership. The initiative seeks to add 1 million new players to the game of hockey by 2022, with Canada serving as the starting point of those efforts. As part of their work, Bauer Hockey and Hockey Canada announced a pilot project this week that attempts to break down the barriers that keep children from playing the game.

THN’s Matt Larkin was there and he spoke to Messier about growing the game of hockey, Canada’s talent pool, the Gretzky trade, and more.
