Predators G Pekka Rinne has hip surgery, expected ready for training camp in September

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Predators goalie Pekka Rinne has had arthroscopic surgery on his left hip and will need approximately four months to recover.

General manager David Poile said Thursday that Rinne had surgery Wednesday to correct a situation team officials were aware of last year. After consulting with doctors, the decision was made for Rinne to go ahead and have the surgery now rather than try to postpone for another year or more.

"This just goes to the position, the wear and tear that goaltenders and their current style of play," Poile said. "This is an operation that many, many players in the NHL have had including two prominent goaltenders in Niklas Backstrom and Tim Thomas."

Rinne is a two-time Vezina Trophy finalist already in his career, and he was fourth in the Hart Trophy voting two years ago.

He ranks sixth in the NHL with 152 wins since the 2008-09 season. He also ranks fifth in save percentage (.919) and is tied for seventh in goals-against average (2.36). He tied for second in the NHL with 43 appearances in the lockout-shortened season, tied for fourth with 42 starts and ranked sixth in minutes played (2,443:46). The 6-foot-5, 204-pound Finn tied for the NHL-lead with five shutouts.

Poile said they hope Rinne is ready by training camp, and the goalie will be staying in Nashville for his recovery. The general manager said players have played well after having the surgery.

"If there is a good news in this situation, the year that Tim Thomas had the operation, the following season, he won the Vezina Trophy and the Bruins won the Stanley Cup," Poile said.
