Canadiens obtain defenceman Drewiske from Kings for fifth-round pick

MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens obtained defenceman Davis Drewiske from the Los Angeles Kings for a 2013 fifth-round draft pick Tuesday.

The Canadiens were seeking a veteran to play on their third defence pair.

Drewiske, 28, had one goal and three assists in 20 games and was plus-3 for Los Angeles but had been a healthy scratch of late. He averaged 14:27 of ice time per game.

He was signed as a free agent by Los Angeles in 2008 and has four goals and 18 assists in 126 career NHL games.

The six-foot-two 220-pound native of Hudson, Wis., was a member of the Kings' Stanley Cup team last spring but saw no action in the playoffs. The Kings petitioned to get his name on the Cup.

"Davis Drewiske is a defenceman with good size and experience who has already played more than 120 games in the NHL," Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said in a statement. "He adds significant depth to our group of defencemen."

Drewiske is earning a pro-rated US$650,000 and can become an unrestricted free agent in the summer.

Former Canadien Blake Geoffrion, who played with Drewiske at the University of Wisconsin, tweeted that he is "a great pick up. Great guy in the room and a really solid player. Teammate of mine when I was at Wisco!"
