I started skating in Milwaukee, Wisconsin when I was very young while my dad was playing there for the Admirals, but I played my first game in Germany when he was with the Berlin Capitals. Traveling around with my dad was fun as a kid, because we’d be in different places all the time and I’d just find different pond hockey games to jump in on.

I played on so many different teams in my youth that it was really nice to finally settle in to one place when I made it to junior. I played for three seasons with the Drummondville Voltigeurs and I loved every minute of it. We had some solid teams while I was there and in my second season we went all the way to the Memorial Cup, but we ended up losing in overtime in the semifinal to Windsor.

I attended the draft in 2011 and was taken by the Flyers eighth overall, but it was a very stressful day because you never really know where you’re going to go and it gets very tense. My family was with me at the draft, which was great and there were also bunch of people supporting me back in Drummondville.

I found out I was going to get in my first NHL game at the end of training camp before the 2011-12 season. I was just taking it day by day and throughout camp the coaches kept on me to keep pushing hard and keep making it a hard decision for them. I had a good camp and on the day of our first game they posted the lineup and my name was there in between Scott Hartnell and Matt Read. The fact I made the NHL didn’t’ really hit me all season, because I was so busy just preparing for each game, but this summer is when I finally realized how lucky I was to play in the NHL.
