NHL Roundup: Kovalchuk leads the way as Devils top Flyers 5-2

NEWARK, N.J. - Ilya Kovalchuk capped New Jersey's three-goal first period with his NHL-leading fourth short-handed goal, and the Devils beat the mistake-prone Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Patrik Elias and Adam Henrique, who scored twice, also tallied in the opening period as the Devils beat the Flyers for the third time in three games this season. Andrei Loktionov had the prettiest goal for New Jersey, with a toe-drag move that left Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov at his mercy.

Johan Hedberg had 23 saves for New Jersey, which has won two straight and three of four after a six-game losing streak.

Jakub Voracek and Scott Hartnell scored for the Flyers, who have lost four of five.

FLAMES 5, RED WINGS 2

CALGARY, Alberta (AP)—Lee Stempniak scored the winning goal in the third period and added an assist in Calgary's victory over Detroit.

Stempniak broke a 2-2 tie 5:37 into the third on a beautiful set up from Curtis Glencross, who missed the previous two games because of a wrist injury. Glencross wheeled deep into the Detroit zone and zipped a pass to the uncovered Stempniak in the slot for his seventh goal of the season.

Glencross added his ninth at 9:12, capitalizing on Valterri Filppula's turnover along the side boards. Blake Comeau followed with a goal 48 seconds later to make it 5-2.

Alex Tanguay and Jay Bouwmeester also scored for Calgary (10-11-4), which won its fifth in a row at home.

Niklas Kronwall and Filppula had goals for Detroit (12-10-5).

CANADIENS 4, SENATORS 3, SO

MONTREAL (AP)—Alex Galchenyuk and Lars Eller scored shootout goals, and Montreal won its fourth straight by beating Ottawa.

Eller also scored in the first period and Brendan Gallagher and P.K. Subban added power-play goals in the second for Montreal (18-5-4), which played loosely in its first home game after a five-game trip. Carey Price made 29 saves.

Mika Zibanejad and Daniel Alfredsson had power-play goals for Ottawa (13-8-6), and Patrick Wiercioch also scored for the Senators, who are 1-2-4 in their last seven.

Ottawa goalie Robin Lehner was sharp in the third period when Montreal had three power plays and stretched its shots advantage to 45-32.

Wiercioch, a rookie defenceman, scored his third goal in five games to tie it 3-3. Wiercioch had no goals in his first 26 NHL games.

Both teams earned two wins in the four-game season series.
