Wild acquire rugged forward Mike Rupp from Rangers for Powe and Palmieri

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The New York Rangers traded rugged forward Mike Rupp to the Minnesota Wild on Monday for forwards Darroll Powe and Nick Palmieri.

The deal was announced hours before the Wild faced the Phoenix Coyotes in Arizona.

The Rangers have been looking for depth at forward to complement their top line of Rick Nash, Brad Richards and former Wild star Marian Gaborik. New York is also dealing with the loss of captain Ryan Callahan, who is currently sidelined by a dislocated shoulder.

The 27-year-old Powe has yet to record a point in eight games this season. He had six goals and seven assists while playing in all 82 games last season with the Wild. He played 204 games with the Philadelphia Flyers before joining Minnesota last season.

Rupp will provide Minnesota with a veteran, physical presence. In 565 NHL games over 10 seasons with New Jersey, Phoenix, Columbus, Pittsburgh and the Rangers, the 33-year-old Rupp has 53 goals, 41 assists and 765 penalty minutes. Rupp scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for New Jersey in 2003.

Palmieri, 23, has 10 goals and 21 points in 40 games with Houston of the AHL. He played nine games with the Wild last season and has 13 goals and 25 points in 87 NHL games with New Jersey and Minnesota.

He has been assigned to Connecticut of the AHL.

The Rangers also announced on Monday that forwards J.T. Miller and Brandon Mashinter were recalled from Connecticut, and forward Benn Ferriero was assigned to the AHL club.

The 19-year-old Miller has a goal and two assists in his last two games with Connecticut. Overall, he has eight goals and 12 assists in 37 games this season.

The AHL All-Star made his pro debut on April 21, 2012, in Game 2 of Connecticut's Eastern Conference playoff series against Bridgeport.

Miller was the Rangers' first-round pick—No. 15—in the 2011 draft.

Mashinter was acquired by the Rangers from San Jose on Jan. 16. He has three goals and four assists in eight games with Connecticut, including a four-game point streak from Jan. 20-26.

In 38 games this season with Connecticut and Worcester, Mashinter has five goals and seven assists.

Mashinter has played in 13 career NHL games with the Sharks, making his debut on Dec. 29, 2010.

Ferriero had one assist in four games with the Rangers after being recalled from Connecticut on Jan. 25. He was acquired by New York from Pittsburgh on Jan. 24.
