Los Angeles Kings activate star C Anze Kopitar, send newcomer Anthony Stewart to minors

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Los Angeles Kings have activated centre Anze Kopitar from the non-roster list after their longtime leading scorer missed the season opener with a knee injury.

The defending Stanley Cup champions also assigned newly acquired forward Anthony Stewart to their AHL affiliate in Manchester on Tuesday.

Kopitar injured his knee shortly before the lockout ended in a collision while playing in Sweden. Kopitar has led Los Angeles in scoring in each of the last five seasons, and he shared the Kings' playoff scoring lead with captain Dustin Brown during last summer's run to their first championship.

The Kings acquired Stewart from Carolina last week for enforcer Kevin Westgarth. Stewart cleared waivers earlier this week.

Los Angeles put defenceman Matt Greene on injured reserve Monday with a back injury.

Who should the Vancouver Canucks hire as their new head coach?

"Last year we came in as maybe an underdog, quietly. Got off to the right start just because teams weren't really ready for us. But this time around that's not the case. They realize we are a good team and they're ready to go against us, right off the get-go."

- Los Angeles' Colin Fraser. The Kings have lost two in a row and are now tied 2-2 in their series against the San Jose Sharks.
