Oilers sign top draft pick Nail Yakupov to three-year, entry-level deal

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oilers have signed their top overall draft pick Nail Yakupov to a three-year, entry-level deal.

The right-winger was picked first in this year's draft, as Edmonton held the top pick for the third straight year.

The Russian had 31 goals and 38 assists in 42 games last season for the OHL's Sarnia Sting. He had 49 goals and 101 points in the 2010-11 season.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder played to a silver medal at this year's world junior championship.

“I think when you’re at home the first two games, sometimes you get a little bit too comfortable at home. Then you come on the road, maybe it’s like a rude awakening…We’ve had three series to figure that out, learn it. We definitely want to be better (Monday), especially in the first game on the road.”
