Retired defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom to stay with Red Wings as a scout, likely in Europe

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings have hired former star defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom as a scout.

Assistant general manager Jim Nill confirmed the move Sunday, adding that Lidstrom would likely be based in Europe. Lidstrom plans to move back to his native Sweden.

He retired in May after winning seven Norris Trophies as the NHL's top defenceman and helping the Red Wings win four Stanley Cups in 20 seasons with the franchise.
