Pittsburgh Penguins deal defenceman Zbynek Michalek to Phoenix Coyotes

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Pittsburgh Penguins dealt defenceman Zbynek Michalek to Phoenix Coyotes immediately following the first round of the NHL draft Friday.

The Coyotes sent defence prospect Harrison Ruopp, minor-league goaltender Marc Cheverie and a third-round pick (No. 81) in this year's draft the other way.

The Penguins drafted two defenceman in the first round Friday, taking Derrick Pouliot at No. 8 and Olli Matta at No. 22.

Michalek had two goals and 11 assists in 62 games last season. In 550 career contests, the 29-year-old has 34 goals, 113 assists and 246 penalty minutes.

The trade with Phoenix wasn't the only deal Pittsburgh made at the draft. The club sent centre Jordan Staal to the Carolina Hurricanes for centre Brandon Sutter, defenceman Brian Dumoulin and Carolina's first-round pick, which the Pens used to take Pouliot.
