Host Shawinigan beats London 2-1 in overtime to claim Memorial Cup

Anton Zlobin had both goals for the Quebec League's Shawinigan Cataractes in a 2-1 overtime victory over the Ontario League's London Knights to claim the first Memorial Cup in franchise history.

The Knights, who dominated the first period, opened the scoring with a Ryan Rupert marker at 5:42. Zlobin tied the score at 3:01 of the second period.

Though the game was wide open with several scoring chances for each team after the Zlobin goal, neither squad could find a second tally in regulation.

In overtime, with a little more than two minutes remaining, Zlobin scored on a one-timer from the slot to give Shawinigan the win.

NOTES: This year was the eighth time the championship final has been settled in overtime and the first since 1983, when the format was changed to include a fourth, host team...Shawinigan, who lost in the second round of the QMJHL playoffs, are the ninth host to win the Memorial Cup...The Cataractes are the only team to have defeated the champions from all three CHL leagues...Zlobin was named the championship game's first star...A sellout crowd of 5,250 watched the home team take the title.
