Edmonton Oilers re-sign veteran defenceman Andy Sutton to a one-year deal

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oilers and defenceman Andy Sutton have agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension, the team announced Monday.

The 36-year-old has appeared in 33 games with the Oilers this season, collecting three goals, six assists and 56 penalty minutes.

The six-foot-six 245-pound Sutton was acquired by the Oilers last summer from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for fellow defenceman Kurtis Foster.

There was talk that Sutton, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, could be moved to a contender before the NHL's Feb. 27 trade deadline.

But it now appears Sutton will be staying put in the Alberta capital.

In 657 career games with San Jose, Minnesota, Atlanta, Ottawa, Edmonton and the New York Islanders, the London, Ont., native has 149 points (38 goals, 111 assists) and 1,161 penalty minutes.

Sutton has been suspended twice this season for a total of 13 games for separate illegal hits to the head of an opponent.

He is making US$2,125,000 this season.
