No, the Capitals will not go 82-0-0. No, the Blue Jackets will not go 1-76-5. And, no, the Habs are not going to finish at 8-67-7. Lots of goalie questions filtered in this week. Time to help you with your anxiety - let’s get to your letters!
Hey Dobber, I have been proposed a trade - Daniel Sedin and Martin St-Louis, I would give up Nicklas Backstrom and Daniel Briere. Backstrom is ranked up and down, but not sure how he will perform this year - is he overrated? Just missing strong LW and RW.
Jibba, San Jose, Calif.
Hey Jibba - giddy up. That’s a great deal for you. Yes, I think Backstrom is bouncing back this season and no, he is not overrated. But you are getting two proven players who consistently post more than 90 points.
Hey Dobber, I've been offered Nicklas Backstrom (C - Was) and Alex Edler for John Tavares and Brian Campbell. 16-team, head-to-head, one-year Yahoo league. Nine forward, four defense, two goalie and three bench. Categories are G, A, +/-, PPG, SHG, W, GAA, SV% & SHO. Pull the trigger?
Kevin, Ottawa, Ont.
I think Backstrom, Tavares and Campbell will all have big jumps this season compared to last year. I think Edler is taking a small step back due to the loss of Christian Ehrhoff. In your shoes, I would wait and see how long Tavares continues to roll and how desperate the other manager gets with his offers.
Is it worth dropping a goalie who is going out the door like Dwayne Roloson to pick up a goalie such as Tuukka Rask who is a promising talent with a good team in front of him even though he is not a starter?
Jeffrey, Erie, Penn.
It would depend on the rules in your league and the other goalies on your team - not to mention your current situation (i.e. “rebuild” vs. “going for it”). But in most formats and situations, I would make a swap like this because Rask is going to be a star sooner rather than later.
Hey Dobber, I have a quick question for you: I'm in a pretty basic league, two points per goal, one point per assist, and I have a choice of either Alex Semin, John Tavares or David Krejci for my final forward spot. Who would you take?
Landon, Vancouver, B.C.
I would take Tavares. Semin may get more goals and points (and many feel he will), but I think he is an injury risk and I believe Tavares will take another step towards superstardom.
I'm in a one-year head-to-head league and, so far, I'm having a bit of a goaltending problem: his name is Dwayne Roloson. Semyon Varlamov, Al Montoya, and Jose Theodore are the best free agents available. I also have Jonas Hiller and Marc-Andre Fleury, so I could bench Roloson until he finds his game. What would you do?
Matt, Oshawa, Ont.
I would swap for Varlamov, unless you are extremely limited in the amount of transactions you can make in a year. Varlamov may be injury prone, but he is very talented and effective when he does play and that makes him the perfect No. 3 goalie in fantasy hockey.
I have been offered Logan Couture for Joe Corvo and Matt Moulson where goals and assists count for one point each from forwards and two points for defense goals.
Khan, Toronto, Ont.
Take it before he changes his mind. Couture is a slight (in one-year leagues) upgrade on Moulson, while Corvo is a dime-a-dozen defenseman who can be easily replaced via the wire.
Which young goalie is a must-have in a keeper league? All these goalies are available on the free agent list. Cory Schneider, Devan Dubnyk, Jhonas Enroth, Tuukka Rask, Jonathan Bernier, Steve Mason, Al Montoya and Jacob Markstrom. I currently only have Corey Crawford and Dwayne Roloson in net and it’s hurting. Two goalie spots, one point for win, five for shutout. I'm pretty deep at forward and would drop either Hornqvist, Gagner or Luke Adam for one. Thanks!
Joel, Carstairs, Alta.
If I’m you, I drop Patric Hornqvist and Sam Gagner and pick up Jacob Markstrom and Al Montoya. Between those four goaltenders, you should find two every week who will help you – and Markstrom is a potential superstar who should be owned in most keeper formats. Rask is another good one who should not be available. If in three weeks it is clear that either Montoya or Markstrom has seized the No. 1 job and Roloson hasn’t turned things around in Tampa yet, then I would drop Roloson for Rask. That’s in three weeks or so, though.
Dobber...quell my panic please...After drafting Malkin, Carter, Duchene and Hemsky as core players in my points only pool, I’m a little nervous to say the least! All I heard in pre-season was how healthy Malkin and Hemsky were... how motivated Carter and Duchene were. It’s tough to go with the so-called pro analyst picks anymore. Is it too early to fold the tents Dobber?
The word on Hemsky throughout training camp was that his shoulder wasn’t healthy. Give up on that one. The other three, however, were supposed to be ready to explode with offense and that just hasn’t happened. I took advantage of the “trade hype” with Carter and traded him away in August for a great package. I still think he will return shortly and post 65 or 70 points, so don’t give up on him. I have a lot riding on Malkin and if he can’t play 65 games it’ll take me out of a few leagues. If does play that many, look for 90 points from him. Duchene is probably going to repeat last year - he’ll have his hot and cold streaks. But in your situation, it’s all riding on Malkin, baby. Your fortunes go as Malkin goes.
Note regarding the Fantasy Mailbag – it is important to indicate whether or not your league is a keeper league or a one-year league. Also note whether the league is “points only,” “standard roto league,” or if there are any uncommon rules that are important to know. This will help in advising you on the right course of action. Also note the mailbag is up every two weeks, so keep that in mind when sending in your question.
Darryl Dobbs’ Fantasy Mailbag will appear every other Wednesday during the season. To send the Dobber your question, click HERE.
