After two full seasons splitting time in the Kootenay Ice goal crease, 19-year-old Nathan Lieuwen finally got his chance to be a bonafide No. 1 in 2010-11 and the Abbotsford, B.C., native did not disappoint.

Lieuwen played a career-high 55 games this year and also set a new benchmark in wins with 33. But he didn’t really start shining until the post-season. Lieuwen’s 2.24 goal-against average and three shutouts were tops in the Western League as he backstopped the Ice to the WHL championship.

And his success couldn’t have come at a better time. After going undrafted last year due to his third concussion in as many seasons, Lieuwen has another chance to be selected into the NHL this June in Minnesota.

THN’s Ryan Kennedy caught up with the 6-foot-5 netminder at the Memorial Cup in Mississauga for a short one-on-one interview.
