Despite losing in the Ontario League final, the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors were considered the top team in junior hockey for much of the year and one of the reasons they were so highly touted is their unrelenting commitment to defense.

The Majors surrendered a measly 170 goals in 2010-11, which was the lowest mark in the OHL and second best in the Canadian League, behind only the powerhouse Saint John Sea Dogs, who allowed 165.

Leading the Majors’ defensive corps is fourth-year rearguard Brett Flemming and his partner, sophomore Stuart Percy. The duo finished first and second in plus/minus in the OHL this season, Flemming with a gaudy plus-60 and Percy with a slightly less impressive plus-50.

THN’s Ryan Kennedy caught up with the Majors’ top tandem at the Memorial Cup to discuss their success and the mentorship process in Mississauga.
