Jordan Staal’s fifth season in the NHL started late after foot and hand injuries prevented him from hitting the ice until January. But since then, the 22-year-old Selke Trophy finalist has been providing his usual terrific two-way play.

In fact, if he hadn’t been injured, Staal would have been chasing down a career year. Without Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin in the lineup, Staal is being counted on as a key contributor and leader for the team and he’s responded with 25 points in his past 29 games.

Even without their two superstars, the Penguins are fourth in the East, four points behind Philadelphia for the division and conference lead. But is Staal emerging as the team’s newest superstar?

THN’s Ken Campbell caught up with the Thunder Bay, Ont., native and his teammates to discuss Staal’s importance to the Pens.
