Player of the Week - March 21

The Hockey News player of the week for the period of March 14 to March 20 is San Jose Sharks center Joe Pavelski.

At a time when every point is crucial for teams competing for a playoff spot Pavelski has absolutely been doing his part for the Sharks. The shifty playmaker had eight assists, 11 points and was a plus-four this week.

In the Sharks’ only loss of the week (and only their fourth loss in regulation in their past 25 games), against Chicago, the 26-year-old still managed to score once against Corey Crawford and added an assist off Joe Thortons’s goal in the first period

Against the Dallas Stars Tuesday night, the Stevens Point, Wis., native notched four helpers, including one on Ryan Clowe’s tie-breaking goal in the opening two minutes of the third period. Pavelski’s points helped the Sharks rally back from a two-goal deficit and beat the Stars 6-3 in Dallas.

In two more solid performances on Thursday and Saturday against Minnesota and St. Louis, respectively, Pavelski added two goals and three assists to his stat sheet to finish the week.

With 16 goals and 41 assists for 57 points in just 65 games this year, Pavelski is on pace to have the best season of his NHL career – just two points away from matching his career high 59 points in 80 games in 2008-09.
