This being the first Top 10 of 2011, we thought we’d take one last look back at 2010. Everyday at THN.com (or pretty much everyday) you can find a new “Say What?!?” feature, billed as a shocking, funny or noteworthy quote from personalities around the NHL.
While hockey players aren’t known as the best quote in sports , someone still says something pretty good every once in a while. Here are THN.com’s Top 10 Say Whats?!? of 2010
10. Sept. 1 – “Old Man and the Ice”
“I'm 100 percent sure this is it. I know that I'll never play in the NHL again. It's not a hard decision. I think the hardest thing is you get a little emotional talking about your family. I couldn't have played any longer than I did and I accomplished what I wanted to.” – Chris Chelios, who retired at the age of 48. His career spanned from 1983-2010.
9. May 24 – “All I want for Christmas…”
“My teeth weren't that good to begin with, so hopefully I can get some better ones.” – Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith after he lost several teeth during Game 4 of the Western Conference final.
8. May 26 – “Shotgun!”
“Nick is going to be a Red Wing ‘til the day he hangs them up. I may try to draft one of his sons one day.” – New Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman when asked if he would try and bring Nicklas Lidstrom to the Lightning.
7. Sept. 13 – “Uh, good choice”
“Dustin Byfuglien will have a chance to play defense. I’ve been told he is a defenseman; he was a defenseman. That was his position and he likes it. He wants to be there. I will give him every opportunity to show us he can play defense. If he can do that, wonderful. That’s great.” – Atlanta Thrashers coach Craig Ramsay.
6. Jan. 18 – “C’mon, man!”
“First of all, it’s a curse. Voodoo. As soon as a guy gets put on the cover of The Hockey News, it’s like Sports Illustrated. He goes right into the tank.” – Los Angeles Kings GM Dean Lombardi on Dec. 14, 2009 cover boy Anze Kopitar, whose play tailed off precipitously afterwards.
5. March 18 – “No one is off limits”
“He is definitely reckless and he's not always in control of what's going on. I have no problem playing that way, but you need to answer the consequences…Maybe somebody needs to grab him and give it to him one time.” – Blackhawks agitator Adam Burish on Alex Ovechkin.
4. March 1 – “Clear you throat”
“He was yelling pretty urgently. There’s different pitches of yell and he was screaming.” – Jarome Iginla on Sidney Crosby calling for the puck prior to scoring the overtime game-winner in the gold medal game at the 2010 Olympics.
3. July 28 – “Hey! You’re not supposed to say that”
“I'm kind of happy he's not. I didn't want to see him. I just hate the guy...I can't lie, sorry.” – The Penguins' Max Talbot when asked about Alex Ovechkin not being in Pittsburgh for the summertime press conference announcing the just-played 2011 Winter Classic.
2. Sept. 14 – “Hey buddy, welcome back?”
“He’s got a couple of team dinners he’s got to get through just for leaving us for a year, making a lot more money than he should make.” – Detroit's Dan Cleary on Jiri Hudler, who left the team to play in the Kontinental League for one season before returning this year.
1. Nov. 16 – “I’m just sayin”
“Hopefully someone on their team addresses it, because, uh, I'm not saying I'm going to do it, but something might happen to him if he continues to be that cocky.” – Philadelphia’s Mike Richards on rookie P.K. Subban’s early 2010-11 play and lack of respect for veteran players.
