Status: Philadelphia Flyers left winger

Ht:
6-foot-3 Wt: 230 pounds

DOB: Feb. 7, 1976 In: Thompson, Man.

Early Hockey Memory: “I remember we were in provincials in Port Hardy on Vancouver Island. We won the peewee tournament (age 12) and we thought we were in the Stanley Cup playoffs. All the families were there and it was during the NHL playoffs when the Oilers were playing; we thought we were them. So it was pretty special.”

Nicknames: “‘Shelley Hock’. I don't know where it came from. I think Tyler Wright or Geoff Sanderson started it.”

Hobbies/Leisure Activities: “In the summer I like golf, just relaxing, fish a little. I like to fish, bike ride. Stuff like that.”

Hockey Inspirations: “The old Oilers. I liked Gretzky, Messier and Semenko. Then the Canucks - Trevor Linden. I grew up on the west coast of Canada. Those guys in the ’80 were unbelievable to watch.”

Favorite Movie:Shawshank Redemption, American History X.”

Musical Tastes: “Pearl Jam, Bush, Tim McGraw, Toby Keith; I like it all.”

Favorite TV Shows: “All those new reality shows. Seinfeld.”

First Car: “Nissan 300 Jet X (Color?) gold (laughs).”

First Job: “Delivery boy for stationary store in Yarmouth, N.S. Stocking shelves with paper and driving a van delivering pencils, pens and paper to hospitals and stores.”

Favorite Meal: “Steak, I love steak.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Oreo. There's no other (smiles).”

Greatest Sports Moment: “My first NHL game. I mean, I never thought I'd ever get the chance to play. But that first game was amazing. It was a situation where I got called up to play against Pittsburgh. Our tough guy (Krzysztof Oliwa) got traded there. There was a little bit of hype.

“I was in the minors and I was fighting. And my first shift was a stoppage outside the blueline. I fought (Steve) McKenna four seconds in. The second shift was a stoppage in their end. Four seconds into the shift I fought Oliwa. So the first eight seconds I had two fights. Pretty amazing. After that, I don't remember (smiles).”

Most Painful Moment: “I had an abdominal injury. Just wouldn't go away. So that was probably the one I remember the most.”

Funny Hockey Memory: “A couple of guys singing the national anthem forgot the words to Oh, Canada when we were playing in the States. So I thought that was kind of funny, being a Canadian boy.”

Closest Hockey Friends: “I'd say…all the guys I play with.”

Funniest Players Encountered: “A lot of them think they're funny (smiles). But I'd say Mike Sillinger is the funniest guy I've played with.”

Toughest Competitor: “Guys that just don't stop; just work and work and work. (Such as?) I don't know any names right now. Guys that just every shift, they're bangin', crashin' and workin'.”

Personality Qualities Most Admired: “I like honesty and respect; two things that go a long way. I've met a lot of people in a lot of things I've done, but the people who stand out are the people who are honest and the people who have respect for everyone around them and everything that's going on around them. So those are people you really admire.”
