Caring Corson

On Aug. 12, I attended the Hockey Night in Barrie charity event to benefit the Royal Victoria Hospital and its regional cancer center in Barrie, Ont.

The event is in its third year and it was another success, raising more than $200,000 for a great cause. It featured a who’s who list of current and former NHLers, celebrities and politicians, including Canada’s PM, Stephen Harper.

One person in particular, though, really helped to make the night great: former NHL player Shayne Corson.

Shayne originally worked with the people from the hospital to start the charity and it has been increasingly successful each year. As someone who had lost his own father to cancer, he understands the importance of the work being done at RVH.

It’s obvious that Shayne really cares about this charity and appreciates the fan support. After the game ended, both he and his son, Dylan, remained on the ice signing autographs and taking pictures with all of the fans. They were the last two people on the ice and they stayed until the arena had emptied.

Outside the rink, the autographs and picture taking continued and Shayne was gracious enough to fulfill all of the requests and talk to the fans.

It was great to see a player of Shayne’s caliber dedicate his time to such a noble cause and really go out of his way to show his appreciation to the fans. Corson is definitely a class act!
