LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Washington Capitals goaltender Jose Theodore capped a difficult season by winning the Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
He beat San Jose's Jed Ortmeyer and Tampa's Kurtis Foster in voting conducted by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.
Theodore's infant son Chace died last summer due to complications stemming from his premature birth.
He went on to have his best year since 2002, helping the Capitals finish with the league's best record and putting together a 20-0-3 run over the final three months.

"We're playing the defending champs and you can tell they're not going to beat themselves. That team, just from them going all the way, you can see it over there. There's no panic…You can tell that's a machine over there and we've got to be at our best."
