Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has reportedly been busy during the Olympic break shopping around for a post-Olympic, pre-deadline deal.

CSNNE.com cited sources claiming Chiarelli was working on a deal for a defenseman, with one source saying the target is Nashville’s Dan Hamhuis, a pending unrestricted free agent whose contract talks with the Predators are rumored to be at a standstill.

Other potential targets in the report included Anaheim’s Ryan Whitney or James Wisniewski, Edmonton’s Denis Grebeshkov or former Bruin and current Carolina Hurricane Aaron Ward.

Hamhuis might be out of the Bruins price range. It’s believed if the Predators shop him they’ll want a scoring forward in return and while Chiarelli could offer Michael Ryder, the right winger’s poor performance this season and $4 million cap hit doesn’t make him an enticing trade option.

The Ducks are only two points out of a playoff berth and might not be in a selling mood, while the Oilers would prefer moving expensive veterans like Sheldon Souray, Lubomir Visnovsky or Steve Staios.

That leaves Ward, who was dealt to the Hurricanes last summer in a cost-cutting move. He was a good fit with the Bruins during his two-and-a-half-season tenure there, so a return to Beantown by the deadline isn’t out of the question.

• The Chicago Blackhawks made a notable move prior to the Olympic break in shipping Cam Barker to Minnesota for veteran blueliner Kim Johnsson and prospect defenseman Nick Leddy, but speculation persists the Hawks are shopping around for another trade.

A recent report in the Chicago Daily Herald suggested Blackhawks management has to decide if they’re comfortable with their current goaltending tandem of Cristobal Huet and Antti Niemi or if there’s a better option available in the trade market – like Dallas’ Marty Turco.

Turco appears to be a tempting target given his experience, but his mediocre performance this season and the difficulty of fitting his $5.7 million salary under the Blackhawks’ already tight cap make that an unlikely possibility.

Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman has consistently defended his goalie tandem, noting Huet and Niemi have the best combined goals-against average in the league at the Olympic break.

Still, that hasn’t stopped conflicting reports over the Blackhawks interest – real or imagined – in Turco or Florida Panthers goaltender Tomas Vokoun, who claims he hasn’t been approached by Panthers management asking him to waive his no-movement clause.

Vokoun would be an even more problematic option for the Blackhawks as he has another season at a cap hit of $5.7 million left on his contract.

For the Blackhawks to acquire either Turco or Vokoun they would have to demote Huet or Niemi, since the former’s contract makes him untradeable and they wish to retain the latter. There’s no way Niemi would successfully clear waivers and one has to wonder how comfortable Bowman and his bosses would be with Huet collecting more than $5 million to ride the bus in the minors.

The Daily Herald also noted the Blackhawks would be interested in Scott Niedermayer should the Anaheim Ducks shop him, but given the recent acquisition of Johnsson and the signing of veteran defenseman Jassen Cullimore to a two-way contract, they’re probably done shopping for blueline depth.

• It’s believed Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero is shopping for a scoring winger during the Olympic break, but, as Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette observed Sunday, the pickings might be slim.

Molinari lists Carolina’s Ray Whitney, Toronto’s Alexei Ponikarovsky and Lee Stempniak and Columbus’ Raffi Torres as the best options currently available. He also noted the asking price for Whitney could be too expensive, Ponikarovsky lacks consistency, Stempniak is weak in one-on-one battles and Torres isn’t a strong skater.

Another drawback for the Penguins is the lack of available, tradable assets. At the past two deadlines Shero showed a willingness to move some of his strong assets, but this year he might not have as much to comfortably part with, which could either keep him out of the trade market or push him toward more affordable – but less notable – options.

ONE POINT I FORGOT TO MENTION was that since VOKOUN has only 1 year remaining on his current contract, the HAWKS would obviously trade him or release him at the end of the 10/11 season. That would mean that the funds freed up by NOT having VOKOUN for the 11/12 season, would allow STAN BOWMAN to resign BRENT SEABROOKE, as his current deal expires at the end of the 10/11 season.

THE DEAL WHICH IS ALSO BEING RUMORED IN VARIOUS FORUMS, which makes a bit more sense than the HAWKS picking up TURCO, is for the HAWKS to acquire TOMAS VOKOUN from the FLORIDA PANTHERS, along with a defenseman; (SEIDENBERG or LEOPOLD as it is being suggested) although I would prefer to have BRIAN ALLEN or BRYAN MCCABE. In return, the HAWKS would be sending a package of HUET, CRAWFORD, and VERSTEEG. VOKOUN has 1 year left on his current contract at $5.7 mill. which is also positive, as he could serve as a further mentor to ANTTI NIEMI, so he could take over the #1 goalie reigns of the HAWKS for the 11/12 season. VOKOUN has a NO-TRADE clause in his pact, but has indicated that he would waive that option, if there was a reallistic reason for him to do that. WHAT BETTER REALLISTIC REASON WOULD HE NEED THAN TO GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO FROM A PERENIAL LOSER IN THE PANTHERS TO A NEW FOUND SOURCE OF SUCCESS CALLED THE CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS ???

STEELER: WORD TO THE WISE----------------IF WE ENTER THE PLAYOFFS WITH THE COMBINATION OF HUET AND NIEMI AS OUR GOALIES, IT "WILL" BE "ONE AND DONE" FOR US !!! And for the record, NIEMI is "not" the problem; HUET is !!! For some reason, he simply cannot move from side to side (post to post) fast enough and most snipers around the league already have the book on HUET'S deficiencies !!! MARTY TURCO is a good goalie, who I will agree does gamble from time to time, but he IS a decent puck handling goalie, better than most. He has played out his welcome in DALLAS, and needs a change of scenery. Because of his playoff experiences, I would say PREFERABLY CHICAGO !!! The problem with that deal is that HUET would have to be included in any trade, and with ALEX AULD as the STARS #1 goalie, they would not need HUET, but could probably use COREY CRAWFORD as a decent backup.

i think fedetenko, kennedy and eaton will be gone soon. lovejoy and enggland hopefully will step up. but jagr will not becoming back to pittsburgh. i would love to see that but it wont happen. the pittsburgh fans should be kissing jagr's butt instead of booing him as they have in the last few years. ray shero loves his young talent at wb/scranton, he will not be giving any of them up. believe it or not, the pens look better the next few years than they do ths year and thats scary. andy sutton would look great in a pens uniform.

Ray Shero needs to 1: Clear immediate salary cap space by waiving Fedotenko, Skoula, and McKee. (Recalling Ben Lovejoy is always a possibility for short term) 2. Create more cap space by putting Max Talbot on Long Term Injury just like the Flyers do. 3. Sign Jagr, he would be the perfect fit on Malkin line. 4. If unable to get Jagr, then trade for Tor. Alexei Ponikarovsky or Keith Tkachuk from St. Louis without giving up Eric Tangradi or Simon Depres. 5. Trade for a defenseman like Trev Alberts in Carolina or Andy Sutton in NYI.

I'm more comfortable with Huet and Niemi that I would ever be with Turco. Marty tends to create his own problems with poor decisions regarding puck distribution and coming out of the net. Some goalies look just spectacular diving hither and yon to save shots that are the result of problems they have created themselves. Almost like a dare.

I commented here in the pre-season that although i thought bruins would win this division their point total would actually drop because they lost heart and soul guys like hnidy, montador and ward and i got that right on as boston is easier to play against in their own zone BUT saying all that i think ward is almost done from games i have saw him play this year. Boston should concentrate on adding someone like brendan witt for this year only and at a price discount for next year if he bites on 1.5 million for next year or how about looking at boullion in nashville, corvo in carolina because they are both useful now and have no contract for next year. Torres isn't a great skater, but he's gritty and is "fast" enough to get to the tough areas and has good hands in tight to the net. With a subline playmakers like Crosby or Malkin, or on a grind line with Staal or Talbot centering he can make a solid contribution to a playoff run. He won't win the cup for you, but he's the right sort of player to have around.

if Chiarelli thinks Aaron Ward is the answer to the B'S woes they're in trouble.... this guy is slow and couldn't get the puck out of his zone even if a soccer field was used.... that said, the B'S problems go much further than the defense.... the offense could use an upgrade too....

"There's excitement in him; he's champing at the bit. You can see it in him and hear it in him. Last year there was a dark cloud over him."
