Leafs D Komisarek out for season, will miss out on Vancouver Olympics

TORONTO - Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Mike Komisarek will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, ending his plans to represent the United States at the Vancouver Olympics.

"Our team doctors have recommended this after a determined effort to rehab the injury without surgery," Komisarek said in a statement Wednesday.

"Having this done immediately is the right thing to do for the Leafs. I am truly sorry that I will not be able to represent my country at the Olympics."

A date for the surgery has not yet been determined.

Signed by the Maple Leafs as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, Komisarek has appeared in 34 games this season. He has three assists and 40 penalty minutes.

Komisarek, 28, was named to the U.S. Olympic team on Jan. 1. He has been sidelined since the Leafs visited Calgary on Jan. 2.
