Everyone is well aware the Pittsburgh Penguins have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to young talent. And on the backend the two brightest stars are Kris Letang and Alex Goligoski.

Letang, a native of Montreal, broke into the league in 2007-08, but his real coming out party didn’t come until last spring. During the Pens championship run the young francophone established himself as a valuable piece to the Stanley Cup puzzle. Letang played in all but one of the Penguins’ 24 playoff games, contributing four goals and 13 points along the way.

Minnesota-born Goligoski got his first taste of NHL action the same season as Letang, but played only three games in ‘07-08. Last year he played 45 games for Pittsburgh, but only saw action twice in the playoffs. This season, however, Goligoski is getting his chance to succeed and that’s just what he is doing. In 40 games this season he has six goals, 22 points and is a plus-4.

Now that both blueliners have evolved into solid offensive defensemen they will play an important role in the Penguins future success. While their personalities may differ, their passion for winning remains the same, a bond that unites all of the Pens young guns.
