The Hockey News player of the week for the period of Jan. 11-17, 2010 is Washington Capitals superstar left winger Alex Ovechkin.
Perhaps the most eye-catching part of Ovechkin’s 10-point week is the fact most came via the assist.
In a 7-4 Tuesday night loss to Tampa Bay, Ovechkin was a minus-1 with six penalty minutes, but recorded two assists, both on the power play. In 21:37 of ice time, Ovie added three shots and avoided a fight with Lightning agitator Steve Downie when teammate Matt Bradley stepped in.
The next night, Ovechkin amassed 25:32 of ice time and recorded four shots for one goal. The Caps won 5-4 in a shootout to start what has been a three-game winning streak.
In a Friday night game at home to the underdog Maple Leafs, Ovechkin’s ice time dipped to 17:50, but he scored one goal on two shots and added four assists for a five-point night, his best of the season.
Finally, in a Sunday tilt against Philadelphia, Ovechkin put up a goal and an assist in 17:30 of ice time to bring his yearly totals to 30 goals and 64 points in 40 games. Ovechkin is second in NHL scoring, three points behind Vancouver's Henrik Sedin.
The Capitals currently sit first in the Eastern Conference with a 30-12-6 record for 66 points.
